Sesbania sesban and Sesbania grandiflora are the two most commercially important species in the Sesbania genus, but they serve very different purposes. S. sesban is primarily grown as a green manure and fodder crop, while S. grandiflora (known as agati or vegetable hummingbird) is cultivated for its edible flowers and pods.
Sesbania sesban is a fast-growing shrub reaching 3-8 meters, with pinnate leaves and yellow flowers. It thrives in waterlogged conditions and fixes 80-150 kg N/ha. Sesbania grandiflora is a small tree growing to 8-15 meters, with large white or red flowers used in Southeast Asian cuisine and traditional medicine.
For agricultural green manuring and gum production, S. sesban (also called S. aculeata or dhaincha) is the preferred species. We supply high-quality S. sesban seeds sorted by variety for specific end-use applications. Contact our team for variety recommendations.
