While sesbania is primarily a tropical species, selected varieties perform well in subtropical regions with warm summers. In areas with frost-free seasons of 120+ days and summer temperatures above 25°C, sesbania can be successfully grown as a warm-season cover crop or green manure in rotation with winter cereals.
Subtropical applications include pre-rice green manuring in the southern United States, China's Yangtze River basin, and northern India's rice-wheat belt. In these regions, sesbania is sown after winter crop harvest in April-May and incorporated in June-July before rice transplanting.
For subtropical regions, we recommend our cold-tolerant sesbania varieties that can germinate at soil temperatures as low as 18°C and tolerate brief exposure to temperatures near 5°C during late establishment.
